Is it too early to be buying Christmas Fabrics ?

I know the gorgeous Mediterranean weather has only been gone for a week or so…..and hopefully there is an encore of sunshine to come but….. our Christmas Fabrics have started arriving at Always Knitting & Sewing from our suppliers.

This is the trigger when someone asks ” Is it too early to be buying Christmas Fabric?” We have all seen the Christmas Trees and decorations going up earlier and earlier at shopping centres each year, before we’ve had chance to finish off the treacle toffee, toffee apples and parkin ……but this is different…………or is it ?

Well I suppose its down to how organised we are with our festive sewing creations, buy early…more choice, more decisions, more ideas. Buy later Less choice, Less decisions, just get on with it !

We can’t decide either, so we don’t showcase our Christmas selection until nearer the time, but it always available to view online or at the shop, if you feel the urge for a Festive sneaky peak, click here to enjoy a bit of Christmas to come …….don’t let Santa catch you !

Whatever you decide, hope you love browsing through our Christmas selection at some stage !

Best Wishes

Twitter Birds Cotton Fabric at Always Knitting and Sewing Online Shop

At Always Knitting and Sewing we love our flowers and nature to make a happy envoironment in our lovely little oasis of all things Knitting and Sewing.

We always have our bird feeders replenished to help our feathered friends through the winter months, this year we have entered the RSPB ‘Big Garden Birdwatch’ in January !

This got us looking at the Birds related haberdashery in our shop, and was a great reminder of how great the birds designs are, and that lovely touch they add to sewing makes, so we selected our favourites to share with you on this blog.

Our ‘ Paradise’ 4 piece, fat quarter bundle of cotton fabrics, is definitely in the top three, beautiful designs with vibrant colours.

paraClose in contention for the tweeters at Always Knitting & Sewing is our ‘Tweet Bird’ design cotton fabric these fabrics are available in five colours and are ideal for nursery & children’s themed sewing makes. The stiching effect design around the birds is a lovely finishing touch.

tweetFor a more abstract designed fabric our ‘Swallows’ design cotton fabric scored highly, In Ivory and grey, with complimenting fabrics; dots & plains, this is a gorgeous cotton fabric bundle.

Our Indie inspired cotton fabric by Poppy, has artistic representation of the birds which contrasts perfectly with the chevrons & Circle designs in a similar colourway…..for me, these are top of the pile of our bird fabrics !

aquabirdsWe had some great fun and discussions around the bird cotton fabric’s, hope this blog can be of use to you in stimulating some creative sewing ideas and maybe even have a peak at the RSPB website for the Big Garden Birdwatch it’s not too late to grab a pack and see which visitors are tweeting in your garden !

Halloween Cotton & Polycotton Fabrics, Ribbon, Buttons at Always Knitting and Sewing Online Shop.

At Always Knitting & Sewing we love this time of year and enjoy seeing the sewing and craft creations made by talented customers with an Halloween theme, ‘Trick or Treat’ , ‘Party Fancy Dress’ & decorative craft look great and build a wicked Halloween atmosphere !

Many perceive ‘Trick or Treating’ to be a modern Americanism picked up in the UK in recent years, however it was practised in medieval times up to the 1930’s. Children in costume would visit the rich, in other parishes, to beg for coins and food, and would pray for the soul of the givers and their friends in return. The modern day does see an innovation in the fancy dress and paraphenalia, probably influenced by some scary films produced over the years !! Remember to have a bag of goodies by the door on the 31st October…better to treat than be tricked ?

We strive to offer a great selection of Halloween haberdashery for sewing and crafting projects. Our Poly Satin Halloween designs are a popular choice and are versatile for all projects. The designs include ‘Spiders Web’ ‘Witches’ & ‘Pumpkins’, 58 inches wide (150cm) & sold per metre. Ideal for; fancy dress costumes, table dressing, & decoration etc.

Fabrics for Halloween & Day of the Dead Festival – Mexico

“Day of the Dead” is  a holiday celebrated in central and southern Mexico during the 1st & 2nd November. The timing obviously coincides with All Soul’s & All Saint’s Day, Halloween, the Mexican people have traditional beliefs of honoring their deceased loved ones.

Our ‘Day of the Dead’ Fabric is pictured below, click on the pic to view the fabric.

It is believed that the gates of heaven are opened at midnight on 31st October, and the spirits of  deceased children are allowed to reunite with their families and loved ones. On 2nd November, the spirits of the adults join them at the time of festivities too.

Day of the Dead is a very expensive festival for the families with much food & decorations. It is not unheard of for families to spend two month’s income to pay homage to their deceased relatives. They believe that happy souls & spirits will give them protection, good luck and wisdom over the year ahead.

Sugar production is big business in Mexico Sugar skulls are therefore cheap to make and represent an individual departed soul, A decorated bright & vibrant sugar skull is made or bought by the family and left on the grave of a deceased love one during the festival.

What can I make with scrap pieces ?

When the time comes around again to make an attempt at sorting out your fabric stash, it’s always a challenge to come up with makes and projects for all of the bits and pieces of fabric accumulated since the last sort out !

After our last sort out, I found this wonderful little book with some great ideas for little projects to make with scap pieces of fabric.  The first project we have made are these cute caddies that could be used to store all sorts of little bits and pieces.  We made them with some small scrap pieces. Really easy to make in about half an hour each,  we added a cardboard base too which added a little bit of stability in the bottom of the caddies

IMG_6866We are going to try a few more projects in the coming weeks and will let you know how we get on with them

You can find the jelly roll scraps book below on amazon  for £4.99

Quilters and patchworkers all over the world are familiar with Jelly Rolls – bundles of coordinating fabrics manufactured by Moda, pre-cut into useful 21/2in (6.5cm) strips. But what do you do with all those left-over pieces once you’ve made your patchwork quilt? Instead of assigning them to the waste bin, save them up and you will soon have enough to stitch at least one of the fun projects in this book. Using simple sewing, quilting and patchwork techniques, there are twenty projects to choose from, including stylish cushions, pretty little bags and a handy pincushion, all of which are quick and easy to make. If you don’t use Jelly Rolls, any odd scraps of fabric can be used instead – just cut them to size and away you go! All the templates are provided as well as some basic tips and techniques, and each project is accompanied by a list of the materials and tools you need, and clear, step-by-step instructions.
